Excerpt:

Now That I Have Your Attention

Laura Sample ’89 runs a Yakima advertising firm called Attention Marketing and uses many of the latest tools and techniques to be seen and heard: websites, TV commercials, social media. She knows a bit about giving and getting attention and appreciates an ad that, Sesame Street-style, moves fast between edits.

“Two seconds is about right,” she says. “It’s about the attention span of adults today.”

But it could be that the fast-moving stream of media images and ideas can only do so much to get its point across, even when it does catch our eyes and ears…

After reading this article I spent some time studying a national advertiser that does a good job of getting attention, keeping attention, and communicating their message. I watched their four most popular ads and timed the cuts. They averaged 1.6 seconds per scene. As soon as I tell you the name of the company you will recall their message because it’s so simple and repeated so often. Southwest Airlines. What’s the message?

I was curious when I learned of a new networking group in my area. It sounded different than others I had attended. No joining fee. No weekly dues. A free networking group – Wow! The other thing that makes it unique - it’s an in-person networking group built around the biggest online social network on the planet – Facebook.

I attended one of their weekly meetings and I was pleasantly surprised. It was a very positive, energetic group. Everyone shared briefly about their business, and there were several “shout-outs” – praises from one member to another after they had hired them, sent them a referral, appreciated their work, etc. After the meeting I received several friend requests from members of the group. We all need to be encouraged in today’s business climate, and this group fills that need well.

Check out their facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/Yakimacoffeeclub?sk=info

Jim's not sure he can afford to advertise. The lesson he should learn from Tom's success? He can't afford not to advertise!

I received a phone call yesterday from a home improvement contractor we’ll call Jim. He provides a rather unique service in our community of 90,000 residents. He has the advantage of being first in our area to offer the service. Jim was calling me to find out about advertising options and what it would cost.

You see, Jim’s competitor — whom we’ll call Tom — has been advertising on local TV for years. Even though Tom hasn’t been in the business as long as Jim, he has been successful at building market share. Consistent advertising has put Tom’s company at the top of homeowners’ minds when they’re ready for the service he provides.

Jim’s not sure he can afford to advertise. The lesson he should learn from Tom’s success? He can’t afford not to advertise!

Don’t let your competitors gobble up market share by beating you to the punch… or the pitch. Get in front of your target market through advertising now. Contact us today and learn more.

So what's my prediction for the big game? Packers over the Steelers of course -- by seven. But as for the commercials...

The big game is almost upon us. And, of course, the buzz about the revenue source for the broadcast has already begun. Yes, I’m talking about the second-highest ranking reason for tuning in this Sunday — the commercials.

It’s wonderful to have the spotlight on work that is often disdained, skipped (with DVRs and TiVo), or just ignored. Creative advertising professionals love to have their work noticed and even appreciated.

So what’s my prediction for the big game? Packers over the Steelers of course — by seven. But as for the commercials, I predict that the dogs will be favorites. After all, how can you say no to those adorable little faces? Just ask Sparky! The dog commercials are certain to be the subject of water cooler conversation on Monday morning.

Doritos will run an ad featuring a cute but fierce little pug on Sunday. That’s not a prediction. I saw a preview. Animal Planet is even airing its Puppy Bowl prior to the game!

So the game goes to the Pack, and the commercials go to the dogs!

We recently created a 3D animated spokes-reptile for a local insurance agency. She had spunk to rival her nationally famous “brother.”

We were surprised when our client received a cease & desist letter from GEICO. We have removed her image, likeness and every reference to the character that appeared on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and our client’s website.

You can’t keep our lady down, though. She may be in hiding now, but she’s just on a tropical retreat. She’s undergoing a transformation that would rival any participant on Extreme Makeover. She’ll be back with all the class and sass that made her an audience favorite.

Think of advertising as an investment. It's an effective at keeping your company at the top of potential customers' minds. That's where you need to be when the time is right and they're ready to buy.

No, it isn’t me. Although I often give the same advice to my clients. This advice comes from one of the most noteworthy, successful business owners in the Pacific Northwest, Les Schwab. My husband is reading his book, Pride in Performance: Keep it Going. In it he advises business owners to advertise, to be consistent in their advertising, to stick with one medium (not a little of this and a little of that), and to continue to advertise regularly.

This is such good advice! You might not see immediate results from your TV, radio, or print advertising. You shouldn’t expect them, either. Think of advertising as an investment. It’s an effective at keeping your company at the top of potential customers’ minds. That’s where you want to be. That’s where you need to be when the time is right and they’re ready to buy.

Maybe your advertising is spread out over several media or you just don’t have the time to devote to it. A good advertising agency will help bring direction and focus to your media strategy. It will also allow you more time to do what you do best – run your business!
